Which Voice Will You Listen To?

Matthew 28:19-20

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

While I have worked to create an inviting space for us to gather and encourage each other, I’m still not sure where God wants all of this to go. I feel a stirring and passion in my heart so I have to believe that I am moving in a direction confirmed by God…..

What Now?: Beyond the Cross

Christ is Risen!  At the cross Christ died for you and for me. In His resurrection, He defeated death in final victory.

What now?

Jesus gave us our life’s purpose in Mathew 28:19:

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

Our purpose beyond the cross, our life’s meaning, is this….

Meet Me at the Cross

I think it’s safe to say the novelty of quarantine has worn off, and the reality of our circumstances is taking root in our hearts and minds.

Last week was hard for so many reasons. How can I focus on my kids’ education when I’m overwhelmed with the realities of everything else? How do I admit that I can’t manage teaching three children simultaneously (and ALL the logins)? How do I process the uncertainty of it all?

There are moments of such preciousness being home with family, and then, without warning, a dark cloud of anxiety consumes me.

Enough. Be still. This burden is far too great for you to carry, so bring it to Me.

Perspective in a Puzzle

At the start of our quarantine, we pulled out a new puzzle with 1,000 pieces. Day by day we have been adding a few more pieces to our masterpiece. Then one day, I was reminded just how important perspective can be.

Let me back up for a minute. BQ (Before quarantine), I sat down to plan out our summer, already overwhelmed at the many activities and sports calendared for the spring. It felt as if my puzzle of life had all of these pieces that I was trying to cram together, hoping they would fit.

In my mind, I knew how I wanted the picture to be, but in reality I was only becoming more overwhelmed by the day.

BQ, had you been in a state of constant GO, too?

Which Armor Will You Choose?

Do you feel like you awoke one morning to an all out war…a war in which the battlefield is invisible? Do you find your mind wandering into a deep, black hole? Friend, if you answered yes to either of these questions, rest assured you are not alone. But I do not want you to feel hopeless, either.

I want to share a defense that will assure victory. Ready? Let’s go!

Answering The Call

It is during this season that I’m so thankful for God’s goodness everywhere. It is evident that the Church is not a building but rather God’s people going into the world to serve Him.

This past Sunday, Grace Fellowship Church launched a new initiative to Call*Pray*Help. I knew I wanted to do my part to connect with others through phone calls, to offer prayer and assistance where it was needed. This is an opportunity for me to give to someone else during these uncertain times.

I called Mrs. Margaret (name has been changed for privacy), all huddled in the corner of my dining room away from the kids, hoping this second call would not be too awkward. The first call, thankfully, had not been. I would check this off my list and then move on about my day.

Or would I?

Reconnect

Y’all, I need you to know that the circumstances of this past week have drawn me toward media and away from His Word. This is not a good place to be. Today, I was able to reconnect with Scripture at a time I needed it most.

I opened up to Psalm 55, and I think it’s important to read through the entire passage. Tonight, I will share some highlights with you….

Vs 1-2: “Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught…”

Vs 4-5: “My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me. Fear and trembling have beset me; horror as overwhelmed me.”

Vs 9: “Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words..”

Vs 16: “As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me.”

Vs 18: “He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.”

Vs 22: “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

Vs 23b: “But as for me, I trust in you.”

The first part is David sharing his utter despair and fears of the evil he is facing. The second part is his acknowledgement of God’s provision, safety, and steadfastness in his life.

God IS in control. We are called to TRUST and not worry. The circumstances we face must not overwhelm us because faith is more powerful than fear.

Mirror Mirror

Mirror mirror

On the wall

Who do you see?

Is it even you at all?

When you look in the mirror who do you see?  Is it a woman carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders?  Has she gained a few too many pounds?  Too skinny?  Maybe you are agonizing over the wrinkles and scars on her body from years of life. Do you see her smile or are you too focused on her worry lines?

Stop for a minute. That reflection you’ve been staring at just now…that’s the world’s reflection of you.  The scars, the wrinkles, the wrong proportions, those are the things the world wants you to see. Those are the things the world says define you.

Let’s take another look. What does God’s reflection of you look like?

Look closer.  Do you see the strength of a woman who has weathered difficult storms?  Do you see a body that has carried and brought precious children into this world?  Do you notice eyes that are windows to a soul so deeply loved by her Savior?  Do you see hands and feet that have served her family and others well?

All believers are blessed with personal gifts of the Spirit. Paul highlights these gifts in 1 Corinthians 12: 7-11

“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.  All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.”

The Bible tells us that when we place our lives in His hands, God places specific gifts in our beings just as He wanted them to be. Do you get that?  He gives gifts that are perfectly placed in us.

Want to know what else?  When we as believers step up to the mirror, He sees those perfect gifts in our reflection…and each of us have gifts that are equally as important as the others. Not only do we have them, but we are called to use our gifts to unify the Church.

But how can we serve others with our gifts if we can’t recognize them in ourselves?  So go ahead. Walk up to the mirror again. Do you see what God sees?  Are you looking at the world’s reflection of you or are you seeing His reflection?

Don’t get me wrong. There is physical beauty in each of us (we are beautifully and wonderfully made), but His reflection goes far deeper to reflect our hearts, our gifts, our souls.

He wants you to see a nurturer, an encourager, a person who opens their home to others in hospitality. He wants you to appreciate the teacher in you or the mom who is raising God-fearing children. He wants you to see a grandmother who imparts wisdom to her adult children or a faithful friend walking alongside another in pain.

1 Corinthians 13:12

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”

Today our reflections remain imperfect. When He returns our reflections will be no more for we will be fully restored to Him. We shall see Him face to face.

Until then, what do you see in the mirror?  Who do you see?  He wants you to see a child of His who has the power to change the world…one reflection at a time.

All Things To All People

Have you ever tried being ALL things to ALL people and it only left you feeling exhausted and frustrated? Maybe you are a mom to kids who aren’t always respectful? Are you a volunteer with PTA only to find yourself a committee of one? Maybe you take in more responsibility at work hoping for the recognition you longed for but have yet to receive? You wear ALL the hats: wife, mom, CEO of the home, Uber-kid driver, logistics specialist, room mom, full-time career woman, chef, party planner, personal shopper…trying to maintain sanity but instead just losing a piece of yourself each and every day.

I hear you! I used to get SO overwhelmed (and still do at times!). But with a change in perspective, my hope is we come away with adding peace to our soul instead of endless exhaustion. Ready to find out how?

Have you heard the saying stop trying to be all things to all people? Yep, me, too! And it’s something that became a part of my mindset. So you can imagine how confusing it might have been to read 1 Corinthians:

“…I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I might share in its blessings.”
~1 Corinthians 9:22

Paul is talking to a group of believers. He wants to communicate to them that while it may be his right to reap rewards for his service in ministry, he has chosen to be self-sufficient so that he may not be boastful before the Lord.

He goes on to tell the church in Corinth how he has intentionally ministered to ALL groups of people: Jews, Gentiles, those under the law, and those outside the law and all while maintaining who he is in Christ.

He became ALL things to ALL people using ALL means he had in order to point different groups of people to Christ.

Is this our calling, too? I just acknowledged that attempting to do so only leaves me tired and feeling inadequate.

You see, I think we have to look at this concept through the lens of God instead of the lens of the world. When we attempt to be ALL things to ALL people through the world’s standards, we will lose a piece of ourselves each and every time. But when we become the hands and feet of Jesus (ALL things…because what can be more then this?) to ALL people (God calls us to share the gospel with the world) by ALL the means then we fill our souls with an inexplicable peace.

Doing it God’s way leaves us MORE filled rather than less. Our hearts overflow with peace, hope, and love when we live each day in service to Him.

So the next time you are chauffeuring kids from place to place, or decorating for the next school event, or maybe even not getting the recognition you deserve at work, ask yourself why you are doing all the things…for the world’s approval or for God’s glory? Work unto the Lord. His kingdom is present in the day-to-day of YOUR life. You can be ALL things to ALL people through the lens of Christ.

Preach, Sister!

Have you ever been in church or at a conference where someone’s message hit straight to your core?  You thought, wow, if only I had something like that to offer!

I’ve been there. Now what could I possibly have to say of any inspirational value to someone else?  Why the heck do I feel the need to write a blog about my faith?

So often in this process I’ve let satan tell me that I’m not knowledgeable enough in Scripture or educated enough in the Bible or certainly qualified enough to minister to others through the sharing of my story.

And then I came to 1 Corinthians. Recently, I started in Acts and have just kept moving forward in the New Testament. The timing in reaching 1 Corinthians is no coincidence. As I’ve had these questions pop up in my head, God brought me some much needed clarity through the Scriptures I’m about to share.

1 Corinthians 1:17

“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel- not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.”

Paul is talking to the church in Corinth. Unlike me, Paul was very well educated in Scripture, had a direct physical God-encounter that radically changed his life, and went from murderer to preacher. His pathway to sharing his faith journey might be different than mine but our calling is the same….preach (or simply share) the gospel.

I am going to assume that Paul had to fight the urge to draw on his theological training/education in order to allow God to be at the center of his message. On the other hand, I have to fight the urge to avoid sharing due to my lack of formal religious training in order to share the gospel through my own life story.

We all have to leave something at the foot of the Cross to allow Christ’s power to consume us so that our message is about Him, for Him, and nothing else.

If my focus is on me and how I’m being portrayed, then it can’t be on Him and the power of the gospel. God will provide the words that need to be heard in order to reveal His glory, and He does this when I am in tune with Him.

How does the tuning process work?  How can a beautiful melody occur between my Father and I?  It begins and ends with a relationship…through prayer, fellowship in community, communication through Scripture, and time, among other things.

So if you are like me and get nervous about saying the wrong thing to someone, knowing you are doing your best to share His Truth, rest assured that neither you nor I have that kind of power. All He asks is that I make myself available, and He will do the rest!

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

And so it was with me, brothers and sisters. When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.  For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.  I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling.  My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.”

You see, God isn’t looking for elite religious pedigrees. He’s looking for a relationship. He’s looking for you. He’s looking for me.

I feel called by God to share my story, a story unlike any other. My prayer is that He will always guide my spiritual revelations so that my story, His story, brings hope and encouragement to others.

Feel like you have nothing to offer?  Afraid you aren’t equipped to know His Truth?  Let’s lay those uncertainties at the Cross because God is calling YOU!  If we open our hearts and minds to Him, He will use us in amazing ways for His purpose to reach those around us. You just never know when your story will forever be intertwined with another.

So many people’s stories have impacted mine because they had the courage to share!
